WARNING: THE PLAY CONTAINS NUDITY, COARSE LANGUAGE, SMOKE MACHINE.

Six women from diverse background meet on ‘ladies day’ in a London bathhouse where they share the most intimate details of their lives, loves, dreams and frustrations. Steaming is the heart-warming, ribald classic by Nell Dunn

The show is known for its razor-sharp, acerbic dialogue and YES, its nudity.

There’s Violet who runs the bathhouse, always ready with a towel and a listening ear. Mrs Meadow (Val Lehman) and her daughter Dawn who are regular visitors, for their weekly bath. They have no electricity at home and look forward to their only outing. Jane and her friend Nancy went to school together and are now both separated from their husbands. Jane, a remnant of the 1960’s, has left her husband and Nancy is an uptight organiser whose lawyer-husband left her. For a younger woman. Josie doesn’t want to be like Nancy who she refers to as, “boring, boring, boring” and no one wants to be like Jane.

Josie (Alli Pope) is a colourful character who enjoys nothing better than sharing the details of her love life and fantasies, much to the bemusement and disgust of the other women. Her working-class background takes the hedonic lead in the fight against closure and is frankly spoken as she describes her pathetic and sometimes obsequious sexual dependency on men.

This play can be considered controversial because of the nudity. But, it’s so much more than that – it’s about friendship, finding your place in the world and fighting for what you believe in. Set in an old turkish bath somewhere in the East End of London where six women of all conditions come to bare their bodies, souls and fantasies. Steaming is a warm- hearted, often humorous portrayal of women coming to know each other.

More great theatre…
