Produced by Shaun Parker and Company

A person walks onto a stage grooving to the tune of his own beat. A pair of remote controls are discovered, and suddenly we are thrust into a realm of play, imagination and possibility!

In the Zone  transports its audience from world to world through movement, sound, nostalgia, and emotion. Grabbing the audience early on with joyous energy, we take a journey through the evolution of computer games. From Pong and Space Invaders, to Guitar Hero and beyond. Excitement and hunger for more grow with each tap of the remote control until we land in the games of now – where life imitates art, and art imitates life. Guns. Fighting. War. Where are we, how did we get here, and what is it good for?

Shaun Parker's,  In the Zone, manages a carefully hidden trojan horse amongst a seemingly fun-for-fun's sake dance piece. As the dancer deftly moves from game to game, a subtle commentary peppers the work, asking – what is the toll of consumption culture upon the Earth and our mental health? Parker allows the audience to linger in this space, exploring the range of emotions that comes with it, before gently guiding us back to a place of play and revelry. Left with some food for thought,  In the Zone is ultimately a celebration of technology and choreographic skill, igniting joy, awe and curiosity for audiences of all ages.

In the Zone comes with a comprehensive Education Resource that will be shared when you book to see the show. This great Education Kit provides you and your students (across any stage) with resources to introduce you to themes from the work and to provide new ideas on how to use the gaming world as a framework for social and emotional development.

The included activities invite students to build on their prior knowledge and allow them to make their own meaning, inferences and interpretations individually and in groups. The activities are divided into pre and post-show experiences and are arranged according to learning stages  and curriculum areas. They can be adapted to meet the interests of your students.

Each experience also comes with an adaptable teacher script.

The first school to book In the Zone at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre will be eligible to book free Hip Hop Workshops as an incursion to be delivered at your school. Contact us for more details.
