The Appleton Ladies Potato Race

Tues 8 June to Wed 9 June 2021 | 8pm & 2pm

Inspired by real life events and featuring a cast of five fabulous women, THE APPLETON LADIES’ POTATO RACE is a funny, honest and heart-warming story about upsetting the potato cart and standing up for your principles.

Appleton is a small country town being forced into the present with a recent influx of wealthy city slickers, treechangers and refugees. Simmering tensions come to a head when new GP Penny Anderson discovers that the famous Appleton Potato Race awards $1000 prize money to men, and a measly $200 to women. When Penny decides to take steps to restore gender parity and coax Appleton into the 21st century, little could she have anticipated the spiralling, hilarious culture war that would follow.

Ensemble Theatre is the longest continuously running professional theatre in Australia, celebrating 60 years of continuous operation in 2018. Ensemble’s extensive history of touring productions include the 20-venue tour of SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS in 2007 which won a Helpmann Award for Best Regional Touring Production, the Drover Award-winning national tour of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE (2011), the acclaimed 26-venue tour of FRANKENSTEIN (2013) and a return season of the smash-hit production DIPLOMACY (2019).

Sharon Millerchip. Actress in The Appleton Ladies Potato Race
A grinning woman in a yellow shirt wears red ear muffs and holds a microphone. She is in a theatre spotlight and only her head and shoulders are visible. There are four bunting flags hung diagonally across the image. From left to right they are red, yellow, light blue and green.
A group of women actors stand on a stage set made up of sacks of potatoes and tiered rows of crates. Two actors in the foreground both wearing jeans and red tops have their backs to the camera. The other three actors face the camera. One stands and is wearing a purple shirt, green pants, white runners and a black bumbag. The others are seated, One has her foot in a moon boot. The ther wears blue overalls and a striped red top. It looks like they are deep in conversation.

★★★★ "A very Australian, effervescently entertaining, laugh-out-loud funny new play with serious things to say and a gentle way of saying them."
